Medical Terminology Course

A medical terminology course is a program that trains individuals in the specific language of medical professionals. These courses come in a variety of different degrees and levels, the level an individual chooses to train to is dependent on their job status. Most of the employees who attend a terminology course are indirect medical workers. This means workers who are not directly responsible for the patients care or diagnostics. Such workers include medical receptionists, administrators, managers and more. It is useful to have a working knowledge of medical terms through a medical terminology course. This allows support workers to interact with medical workers more easily.

There are different degrees and difficulties when in comes to medical terminology courses. The difficulty or level of the course will also affect the length of the course directly. For example courses range from 1 day to 20 weeks. For the sake of simplicity this article will give an overview of three different medical terminology course levels that can be undertaken.

The first level of course is to give employees a working and practical knowledge of medical terminology. This sort of course is held in the direct employment facility of workers or (in house). This is good as it means the course can be done without complicated travel and coordination. Workers can simply turn up to work as usual and receive the training. This level one course is ideal for general practitioner receptionists, support workers and administrators. It usually takes one day in length, and can be divided over two half days, so that it doesn’t disrupt a full day’s schedule. These micro courses will usually be led by a single tutor and worked on in a group fashion.

The second level of course is more complex and requires an intermediate medical background to partake in it. They will usually be delivered over multiple learning channels, combining physical lessons with online tutorials. It will be similar to the first stage where there is a single in house session. Then the rest of the course will be done through distance learning. This uses the resources available to the training company, and the employing company best. As it allows the workers to learn but not have to leave their duties as much. The terminology learned in this course will naturally be more complex and involves more specialized areas of medicine. This is most appropriate for clinical coding staff, special clinic receptionists, summarizers, ward administrators. The length of this intermediary course is 12 weeks which is about the half way point between the 1 day introductory and the full course.

Finally there is the full 20 week course which is designed for senior managers and medical professional administrators. This top level is the most advanced and it takes a lot of work and study. However the content is designed for the highest paid staff so the rewards are worth the work. Again the course follows the same formula of one in-house session and the rest is online tutorials with mentor support.
